The Upside of Peer Pressure

The Upside of Peer Pressure

Peer pressure has an upside!

Isn’t it great when we can see our kids achieve potential that they themselves didn’t even realise? Isn’t that just the juice that keeps us as parents (and Sensei’s!) persisting? On the downstairs beginner Dynamites floor we recently “Graduated” some students to their Yellow belts and on to the upstairs intermediate group. This transition can be challenging but I’m pleased to see how well those students are coping, and moreover improving rapidly, simply because they want to keep up with the kids around them. It reminds me how kids standards and expectations of themselves quickly rise (or fall!) to the level of their peers. This can be the upside of peer pressure! This is nothing new, as adults we know that the quality and potential of our lives is greatly effected by those we choose to spend time and surround ourselves with. It’s so good to see students benefit from THIS type of peer pressure and see that it works!
