Qualities of a Black Belt

Hunter Valley Martial Arts is so much more than simply a Martial Arts Centre.  As the Number 1 Personal Development Center in the region, we are proud to bring you our Qualities of a Black Belt program.

We have been delivering Character Development sessions – we call them mat chats – for many years, and they have become a very important part of our overall curriculum here at HVMAC. We would like to take our students and parents to the next level, and to do this we have monthly sheets that help our students to learn and encourage them to take on the values that we teach. Each month, we discuss a new ‘Word of the Month’, and there is 12 we have selected that we think help to open a dialogue between students and their parents, to help our children understand these concepts. As an example, the Word of the Month could be Courage, Honesty, or Resilience; these vital character concepts that will help your children to understand the importance having the willingness to face fears and challenges with determination.

All Kindymites, and Dynamites earn four pre-testing stripes, for basics, kata, kumite and character.

In order to pre-qualify for gradings, from this grading forward all students will need to submit their homework assignments in order to earn their Character stripes. The homework only takes about 5 minutes to do, and expands on what we have discussed in class in our mat chats. You can get a copy of these homework sheets from your local dojo’s front desk; just ask the staff! In this way, we can really take our Social/Emotional Learning program to the next level, by expecting all students and parents to really take on board our Qualities of a Black Belt, by setting aside some reflective time each month and completing some simple tasks.

We’re excited to help our children, teens and adults focus on developing themselves in a slightly different way each month.
