At Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre, our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes are designed to help students build real skills in a supportive, structured setting.
Whether you are stepping onto the mats for your very first class, returning after time away, or looking to take your training further, our BJJ program gives you the chance to learn from experienced coaches in a safe and welcoming environment.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a practical martial art built around leverage, control, positioning, and technique. It teaches students how to stay calm under pressure, make smart decisions, and apply effective self-defence without relying solely on striking power. That makes it a strong option for adults, teens, and kids who want to develop real capability while improving fitness and confidence.
One of the biggest strengths of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is that it meets students where they are. You don’t need to be highly fit or experienced to start. Our classes help beginners build the fundamentals first, then progress steadily through more advanced movements and combinations.
In your first class, you can expect a clear introduction to the basics of grappling, body positioning, movement, and control.
From there, students work through fundamental techniques that support long-term skill development. As your confidence grows, so does your ability to apply those skills in live training.
This step-by-step approach helps students train at their own pace while still feeling challenged. It also gives more experienced members and advanced students the chance to keep refining their game through quality coaching, repetition, and focused training.
Many people start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training because they want to learn self-defence in a realistic and controlled setting. BJJ is well known for teaching practical self-defence skills that can help smaller or less powerful people manage aggressive situations using timing, control, and technique.
At Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre, the focus isn’t just on learning moves. It’s about building effective self-defence skills that support awareness, calm decision-making, and self-control. These are skills that can carry over into life outside the gym, too.
Students often find that regular training helps them build confidence, improve focus, and develop greater discipline. The physical side of BJJ matters, but so does the mental side. Over time, the mats can help shape stronger habits, better resilience, and lasting self-confidence.
Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre offers BJJ programs for different ages and stages, including:
10-week BJJ fundamentals – male or female (ages 14+)
Womens and girls’ BJJ (ages 10+)
Kids BJJ – Matrats (ages 6-14)
Mini Matrats (ages 3-6)
For adults and teens, classes focus on strong foundations, safe progression, and quality instruction. For younger students, BJJ can be a great way to develop coordination, listening skills, resilience, and controlled movement in a fun and structured way.
Parents looking for a program that blends confidence, respect, and practical learning will find plenty of value here.
There’s also a women’s and girls-only BJJ program led by Head Coach Sensei Kelie Fisher, a black belt and Head Coach for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That gives students access to experienced instructors, strong leadership, and a welcoming team environment from the start.
Training is easier to stick with when the atmosphere is right. Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre’s BJJ program is centred around a welcoming environment, strong coaching, and a supportive community. That matters whether you are a white belt starting from scratch or a long-term student working toward higher ranks and deeper technical understanding.
BJJ can be demanding, but it should still be enjoyable. The right class balances structure, challenge, and fun, while helping students improve fitness, sharpen their skills, and feel part of a genuine community.
For some, that path may include competition.
For others, it is about fitness, confidence, and learning something valuable for everyday life.
If you’re ready to get started, Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre offers a free trial class! It’s a simple way to experience the mats, meet the coaching team, and see whether BJJ is the right fit for you or your family.
