At HVMAC, Minimites is our preschool martial arts program for children aged three to four. These martial arts classes give young kids a fun, safe, and structured way to build confidence, movement, and focus before they move into older kids’ classes. For many families looking for martial arts for preschoolers, Minimites is the right place to begin.
Minimites is designed for children who are ready to join a class, follow simple instructions, and enjoy learning in a small group. Each karate class gives your little one the chance to move, listen, and learn in a supportive dojo environment. It is an ideal start for children who are still building school readiness and social confidence.
Who it is for: Children aged three to four
Program style: Preschool martial arts with a strong focus on movement, values, and age-appropriate learning
Training options: Students can attend once or twice a week, with twice weekly recommended for the best progress
Locations: Available across multiple HVMAC locations
Next step: If your child is younger, Kinder Kicks is available for ages 18 months to three years
With her background in early childhood pedagogy, experience as a primary school teacher, and accreditation in the Rock and Water program, Shihan Sandy designed Minimites to suit how young children learn best. We use a combination of movement, routine, and positive reinforcement to help children feel secure, capable, and ready to participate.
With our program, you’ll child will enjoy:
A safe and predictable learning environment
Gross motor skill development
Hands-on work on balance, coordination, flexibility, and focus
At this age, children learn best when lessons are active and engaging. That is why our classes are built around simple drills, clear routines, and an encouraging pace. No child should feel rushed, blocked, or left behind by unrealistic expectations.
Our goal is not just to teach karate techniques. We help children build listening skills, self-regulation, and discipline in a way that feels age-appropriate and positive. As students learn to follow instructions, wait their turn, and work within a group, they also build a stronger sense of routine and self-belief.
Minimites is a karate class, but it also supports the broader development that matters to parents. Children learn the ABC’s of self-defence and, just as importantly, the ABC’s of life: Attitude, Behaviour and Character. The same values-based approach is used in Shihan Sandy’s mat chats, which explore honesty, gratitude, respect, courtesy, perseverance, and compassion.
This makes Minimites different from many general activity programs. It is not just about being busy, and it is not based on pressure or force. We want children to stand tall, stay calm, and make safe choices with a respectful attitude.
For example, children are introduced to age-appropriate ideas around stranger awareness, bully-busting, and personal safety. Those lessons are taught in a practical and patient way, so children can understand them without feeling overwhelmed. The aim is to help them grow physically, socially, and mentally.
A big part of preschool martial arts is helping children discover what they can do. Through repetition and small wins, they improve their balance, timing, and ability to follow through on a task. Over time, that steady progress can have a real impact on confidence, body awareness, and mental resilience.
Many parents also notice changes beyond the mat. Children often become more willing to try new things, more comfortable making friends, and better able to manage emotions when they feel frustrated or uncertain. Confidence is not powered by pressure. It grows when children practise consistently in a safe environment and are recognised for their effort.
This is especially valuable for children who are still learning how to join in, walk into a room with confidence, or work alongside others. Martial arts can help them build the tools to cope when they feel nervous, distracted, or mentally overloaded. It also helps them understand that real strength includes calmness, kindness, and resilience.
At HVMAC, we have been helping children and families grow through martial arts since 1983, and we offer programs across multiple locations in Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Newcastle and the Central Coast. We also offer age-based pathways beyond Minimites, including Kinder Kicks, Kindymites, older children’s programs, and training for adults. That gives your family a clear path if you want to stay involved for years to come.
Minimites is also a good option for families comparing different styles. Some parents start by looking at mixed martial arts or kickboxing, but for this age group, a traditional karate foundation often gives children the most structured and age-appropriate way to learn. Our dedicated team and each experienced instructor focus on helping children build strong habits before they move into more advanced training.
If your child is ready to join a positive, values-led program, Minimites is a great place to start. It gives young children the chance to move, learn, make friends, and grow in a safe and supportive dojo where every child has room to develop.
What age is the Minimites program for?
Minimites is designed for children aged 3 to 4. It is a great first step for families looking for preschool martial arts in a safe, fun, and age-appropriate setting.
Is Minimites suitable for beginners?
Yes. Minimites is made for young beginners who are just starting out. We keep our martial arts classes simple, structured, and encouraging so children can build confidence at their own pace.
What will my child learn in a Minimites karate class?
In each karate class, children work on movement, balance, focus, and listening skills. We also help them build self-regulation, discipline, and self-confidence through clear routines and guided activities.
How often can students attend Minimites classes?
Our Minimites students can attend once or twice a week. For the best progress, we generally recommend training twice a week where possible.
How does Minimites help with confidence and behaviour?
At HVMAC, we use karate to help young children grow both physically and mentally. Classes are designed to improve confidence, support respectful behaviour, and build resilience through regular practice, repetition, and positive reinforcement.
Will my little one learn self-defence?
Yes. We introduce age-appropriate personal safety concepts in a practical way. This includes helping your little one learn awareness, follow instructions, and respond calmly in different situations, without using unnecessary force.
How is Minimites different from other kids’ classes?
Many kids’ classes focus only on keeping children active. Minimites does more than that. Our program combines movement, values, and early learning in a dojo environment that helps children build confidence, routine, and strong habits from the start.
Can Minimites help my child make friends?
Yes. Minimites gives young kids the chance to learn in a supportive group, take turns, and work alongside others. Over time, many children become more comfortable joining in, speaking up, and making friends in class.
Is Minimites only for boys?
No. Minimites is for all children. We welcome boys and girls and create a positive environment where every child can feel supported, included, and encouraged to grow.
What if my child is not ready yet?
That is completely fine. Every child develops at their own pace. If your child is younger, we also offer Kinder Kicks for ages 18 months to 3 years, which can be a great way to begin before moving into Minimites.
Do you only offer preschool programs?
No. At HVMAC, we offer age-based training pathways for children as they grow, as well as programs for adults. That means your family can find a long-term path through our martial arts for preschoolers program and beyond.
