23 Mar Hunter Valley Martial Arts Maryland Grand Opening
Whether you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time or continuing your martial arts journey, the new Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre at Maryland offers a place to belong and grow.
What Makes the Maryland Martial Arts Academy Special?
This isn’t just another dojo—it’s a purpose-built, full-time training space designed to serve the growing Maryland community and surrounding suburbs.
Students can expect:
- Structured, age-appropriate programs
- A welcoming, inclusive atmosphere
- Expert instruction from experienced martial artists
- A strong emphasis on personal development alongside physical skills
Expanding Beyond Karate
While Chitokai Karate remains at the heart of Hunter Valley Martial Arts, the Maryland centre brings even more to the table. Leading the expansion is Kelie Fisher, a senior karate instructor and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. Alongside Sensei Joel, she will introduce Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes for both kids and adults—adding a dynamic grappling discipline to complement the striking and traditional elements of karate.
In addition, the popular Hunter Fight Fit program will also run at Maryland, offering high-energy fitness sessions that blend martial arts techniques with functional training.
Try It for Yourself
To celebrate the opening, Hunter Valley Martial Arts is inviting the community to experience the new Maryland centre firsthand.
Free introductory sessions will run during Open Week from April 20th to 24th, giving families and individuals the chance to step onto the mats, meet the instructors, and see what training is all about.
Classes officially kick off from April 28th—marking the beginning of an exciting new era for martial arts in Maryland.
A New Home for a Strong Tradition
The new Hunter Valley Martial Arts centre in Maryland is more than just a new location—it’s a continuation of a lineage that dates back to 1989, when the Australian Chitokai headquarters was established at Warners Bay by Brian Hayes and Sandy Hayes. For decades, this foundation has shaped thousands of students, building not just martial artists, but confident, respectful, and resilient individuals.
Now, that same philosophy is expanding.
In July 2023, Mel Hayes and Sensei Anna Hayes stepped into leadership, continuing their family’s legacy while guiding the organisation into its next phase.
The Maryland centre marks an exciting milestone—it’s now the third full-time location under their direction. With a passionate team of experienced black belt instructors, the focus remains clear: high-quality martial arts training in a supportive, community-driven environment.
More Than a Martial Arts Centre
From its beginnings in Warners Bay to this new Maryland location, the focus has always been on developing people first. Confidence, discipline, respect, and resilience are woven into every class.
And now, with a brand new space and expanded programs, even more people will have the opportunity to experience those benefits
If you’ve ever thought about trying martial arts—or you’re looking for a supportive and professional environment for your child—this is the perfect time to get started.
The mats are down, the doors are open, and a new community is ready to welcome you.
